Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Below is a list of questions and answers to those questions that we at KYSA hear most often.  We hope your question is answered somewhere on this page, but if it's not, send the KYSA Webmaster your question and we will do our best to respond.  Thank you!

Q - When does the season begin?

Answer - The Fall league season (Modified, Recreational, and Select programs) starts around the first weekend in September (typically after the Labor Day weekend) and runs 10-14 weeks  into November (Modified, Recreational) or December (Select only).  The Spring league season (Modified and Recreational only) begins the second weekend of April and runs 10-12 weeks into June.

Q - Where do we play?

Answer - Ages 5-8 (Modified program) play their games on Saturdays at Petrovitsky Park. Ages 9-18 will play at the Pea Patch fields on Green River Rd.

Q - Where do we practice?

Answer - This is generally determined by the coach. He or she will decide where and when, typically after consultation with the team members and their families.

Q - Who will my coach be?

Answer - Coaches are usually volunteer parents who have a child on the team. For Select teams, there is typically an interview process, if necessary, to select a coach from a list of candidates. A select coach application form can usually be found on the KYSA website.

Q - What credentials do the coaches have and are their backgrounds investigated?

Answer - Every KYSA coach is required to complete a Washington State Patrol background clearance. The clearances are done every 4 years and the state has the option at any time to review any coach. KYSA tries to have every coach attend a coaching course. There are many license levels from Modified Soccer all the way up to an "A" license (the highest level and usually not required of any coach unless they are coaching college or national teams). These courses are always sanctioned by the Washington State Youth Soccer Association (WSYSA) and conducted by one of their staff coaches trained specifically for teaching coaches. Ask your coach what level of license they hold.

Q - When should I expect to hear from a coach about what team I'm on?

Answer - In the Fall or Spring league seasons (Modified and Recreational), you should hear from a coach 1-2 weeks before the season begins. For the Select program, players are typically notified if they were selected to a team within 5-10 days after the last tryout date.

Q - How many players, in each age group, play on the field at a time?

Answer - Washington State Soccer Association is requiring our association to follow new guidelines for the Modified, or Small-Sided, game of soccer (See small sided program format link on our website). U-5, U-6 and U-7 age groups will play 3-a-side (with no goal keeper), U-8 will play 7-a-side, U-9 and U-10 will play 8-a-side, and U-11 will play 9-a-side.

Q - Do boys and girls play together?

Answer - Only at the Under-5 age groups do boys and girls play together. Once a player is 6 years old they will play on gender specific teams.

Q - Do we get trophies?

Answer - Teams typically get trophies or gifts for the kids at the end of the season. These are not supplied by KYSA and are the responsibility of each team.

Q - What do we get for our registration fee?

Answer - KYSA supplies the game shirts for each season. We also pay the required state insurance fee for each player. All other registration money goes to maintaining fields, and many other administration costs.

Q - What does the registration money help fund?

Answer - Equipment maintenance, field maintenance, balls, paint, etc.. Insurance fees for both KYSA players, coaches and property. Future expansion projects. Administration costs such as newsletters, postage and registration printing, office equipment and much more.

Q - What equipment or uniform will I need to supply?

Answer - Parents need to supply for their players: Soccer shoes, shin guards, soccer socks and shorts.

Q - Who do I contact if I need to register late?

Answer - Please contact the current KYSA Registrar through email at registrar@kysa.org.  All late registrations are accepted on a space available basis.  Please be patient, often times it may be a few days before anyone can get back to you, especially during the beginning of any season.

Q - When do we register for the Fall leagues?

Answer - Fall league registration usually begins in May for all programs.

Q - When do we register for Spring leagues?

Answer - Spring league registration usually begins in January for the Modified and Recreational programs.

Q - When are Select team tryouts?

Answer - Select team tryouts are usually in mid-March, but check the website to be sure.

Q - Can I play spring soccer and tryout for a Select team also?

Answer - Yes, Spring soccer is around the same time as Select tryouts, but usually don't conflict with each other. Spring soccer plays games up to June and most Select teams will generally excuse players with game conflicts. However, it would be up to the player and the coach whether or not spring would conflict with a select players schedule.

Q - Do we use a regular registration form to tryout for a Select team?

Answer - There will be a separate registration process for the "Select Tryouts", followed by another player registration process once a player has been selected to a team.

Q - How young can my player be and what are the cut off ages?

Answer - A Player must be 5 years old to begin.  The Age Group that a player is assigned depends upon the player's age on August 1st of the seasonal year. For example: A U-8 player has not reached their 8th birthday before August 1st.

Q - Do we have to do a fundraiser?

Answer - KYSA has strived to keep our fundraisers “soccer related”. Although occasionally other fundraisers are needed. We do ask players and parents to attend KYSA fundraising events such as the Spring Sounders Game or volunteer and/or participate in the Cornucopia Cup for Select Teams during the summer. KYSA is always in need of volunteers and can always use help in many areas. If you are interested in keeping costs and registration fees down by volunteering, please contact any board member and they will assist you in getting started.

Q - Can I get a refund? Will it be a full refund? Who do I contact for a refund?

Answer - Yes, you can get a refund as long as you contact the Registrar by email at registrar@kysa.org before the first game.  There will always be a $15.00 administration fee withheld. Only under certain circumstances is a full refund given.

Q - What do I do if the practice location or time doesn’t work out for our family?

Answer - Contact your coach or Modified Program Director to see if something can be done. The next step would be to withdraw and request a refund from the Treasurer.

Q - How much does each program cost?

Answer - The following are the current program costs (per playing season), which vary by program.
Modified Program (ages U-5 to U-8):  $60
Modified Program (ages U-9 to U-10):  $65
Recreational age groups (ages U-11 to U-18):  $105
U-10 Dev to U-14 Select:  $169
U-10 Dev to U-14 Premier PDL:  $199
U15-U19 Select/Premier:  $179

Note: All fees are subject to change.  The fees shown here may not reflect any changes that have recently been made.  Check with the KYSA Registrar if you have any questions.

Q - Do we offer scholarships?

Answer - KYSA has a scholarship program.  We ask that you request a form and fill it out describing your hardship.  Board Members review the hardship and give out the scholarships as seen fit. The treasurer keeps this form for tax purposes. Click here for a copy of the KYSA Scholarship Application and Approval Guidelines form.

Q - Why do I need to supply a copy of my child's birth certificate?

Answer - Will a passport work? Washington State Youth Soccer Association requires proof of a player’s age. A player must provide proof of age upon initial registration with an affiliated organization under WSYSA.  Proof of age shall consist of a birth certificate, passport, Uniformed Services Identification and Privilege Card, Government agency documentation, Board of Health Records, alien registration card issued by the United States Government, certificate issued by the Immigration and Naturalization Service. All documentation must be in ENGLISH, or translated to ENGLISH. HOSPITAL, BAPTISMAL OR RELIGIOUS CERTIFICATES WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED!

Q - My check hasn't cleared the bank yet, who do I contact to make sure I am registered?

Answer - Often times it takes our Treasurer time to document each check that is received. Players will not be rostered to a team until their payment check has cleared the bank - a process that takes about 10 days from the time we receive your check. For this reason, we encourage families to pay by credit card during the registration process. However, if you are concerned please contact the KYSA Registrar through email at registrar@kysa.org. Please be patient, often times it may be a few days before anyone can get back to you, especially during the beginning of any season.

Q - I need to withdraw from the program who do I contact?

Answer - First the coach, then the current KYSA Registrar through email by email at registrar@kysa.org.

Q - What training does KYSA offer?

Answer - Courses are given throughout the year for a variety of reasons. Coaching clinics, referee clinics and many meetings are held for coaches to learn about the game. Check with the Modified Program Director or Director of Coaches for courses you may be interested in.

Q - How do I register?

Answer - Registration for all age groups is done online. The registration process can be started by visiting www.kysa.org, clicking on the registration button and following that to the “Online Registration (BONZI)” link. If you have a pop-up blocker installed, you must disable it or the registration process will not work correctly. From this point you must log in using the username/password you created for past registrations. If you are new to KYSA, you must create a username/password in order to continue. Once you have logged in, click the “Registration” button on the left and continue by choosing the event(s) for which you will be registering. If you are registering a player, make sure and choose the “Player” link and if you are registering as a coach use the “Coach” link.

Q - What if I can’t remember my username or password?

Answer - Follow the above instructions to the “Online Registration (BONZI)” link. From the member log in page, click on the “I FORGOT my account information” button. You will be prompted to enter the email on file in your profile. Your username and password will then be sent to you via email.  If this does not work, please send a note to the KYSA registrar at registrar@kysa.org.  The registrar will send you your username and password to the email address on file in your user profile.

Q - Can I fill out a paper form instead of registering online?

Answer - No. All registration is done online so paper forms are not accepted.

Q - What if a potential player doesn’t have access to a computer for registration?

Answer - Parents without a computer should seek out the use of a computer at a public library, neighbor’s house, school, or work in order to register their child.

Q - Do I need email in order to register?

Answer - Yes. An email address is required for registration in order to send confirmation information to parents. Parents without email should register for one of the many free email services available online before registering.

Q - What type of payment can I use?

Answer - KYSA prefers that you pay for registration fees online with a credit/debit card at the time of registration. This allows players to be confirmed immediately and rostered to a team.  If you choose not to pay by credit card, KYSA will accept checks, money orders, or cash (please do not send cash through the mail). NOTE: If you pay by check, your child(ren) will NOT be put on a team until your check has cleared the bank.  Please allow up to 10 days from the time we receive your payment for this process to be completed. If you choose to pay by check and your check is not received by the registration deadline, your registration will be subject to the $10 non-refundable late fee.

Q - Who can I contact if none of this makes sense or if I still have questions?

Answer - The best way is to contact the KYSA Registrar is by email at registrar@kysa.org.  You may also call the KYSA hotline number at 253-852-1054 and leave your name, phone number and a brief message. Please speak clearly and slowly as it is often difficult to understand the messages left on the hotline. If you leave a message on the hotline please be patient. Often it may be a few days before anyone can get back to you, especially during the beginning of any season. All of our board positions are held by volunteers who aren’t paid for their hard work. They do their jobs because of the players and their love of the game.

Q - Do you offer discounts for families with multiple players?

Answer - Yes. Families are required to pay for the 1st and 2nd players. The 3rd player in the family is free and any additional players starting with the 4th are half-price (all players must be playing within the same season i.e., Fall 2005 or Spring 2006). If you want to apply for the family discount, you must answer “Yes” when asked about the discount during the registration process and select the “pay by check” method. The computer does not automatically calculate the discount. You must then send an email to the KYSA Treasurer at treasurer@kysa.org with your request for an adjustment to your fees because of the family discount. Please list your name, phone number, and the names of all registered players in your family when making your request. The treasurer will then give you an adjusted amount to pay. The adjusted amount can be paid by check or you may go back into your registration, change your payment type, and pay by credit/debit card.

Q - Do I have to supply a birth certificate every time I register?

Answer - No. KYSA only requires a birth certificate the first time you register. After this time KYSA keeps the information on file. However, sometimes a second birth certificate may be required under certain circumstances.

Q - Who keeps birth certificates and registration information?

Answer - The KYSA registrar keeps all this information on file.

Q - Will my information remain confidential?

Answer - Yes. The Registrar has been cleared through Washington State Patrol and signs a confidentiality form through Washington State Youth Soccer Association Risk Management. No one but the registrar has the information for you or your child. Coaches will be given only necessary information to contact you and your child.

Q - Who do I contact to update my registration information?

Answer - Parents can update personal information for them and their players by logging into the online registration system with their username/password. If you need help with this, contact the KYSA Registrar by email at registrar@kysa.org.

Q - Can I switch teams? Little Johnny doesn't like playing with big Ben?

Answer - KYSA tries to discourage switching teams once team rosters are set. It is very difficult to switch players due to the restrictions put on roster sizes. The best way to ensure you’re on the team you want is to request your coach or player on your registration form. We try to accommodate all requests, but sometimes due to the number of players, requests can't be met. Another way is to volunteer to coach, this way you get to choose your practice site, time and days! Training is available and it's a fun way to really get connected with your child and other players and parents!

Q - Can I call or meet the registrar any time of day or night at her home?

Answer - Please use common sense when contacting ANY BOARD MEMBER!   All the board positions are held by volunteers and aren't paid for their hard work and family sacrifice. They do their jobs because of the players and the love of the great sport of soccer. Be courteous and always look at the clock before contacting any board member.

Q - How can I get involved or be placed on a committee?

Answer - Contact any board member for the possibilities.

Q - I want to coach. Who should I contact?

Answer - Contact the Modified Program Director, Recreational Program Director or Director of Coaching Development by voice mail through the hotline number, or by email through the website.

Q - Comments we wish we would hear from Parents:

Answer - My child had a great season and can't wait to play next season! KYSA is doing a great job of developing coaches and players within the organization!

We love praise and positive comments just like anyone else.  Let us know if we are doing a good job!

We love our coaches and hope they feel appreciated for their efforts.

Have you hugged your coach lately?  At least let them know you appreciate all they do for your player!
